Approvals have been acquired from NARA to digitize these videos for preservation and display on the internet.

The conversion from 16mm ("intermediate" or "preservation") films is costly, and very time consuming, and has to go through an approval process at the National Archives (NARA).

As a result, WildfireTUBE.Com is incorporating as a non-profit to speed up preservation of these films digitally before they are lost forever. We will also make each converted film freely available for viewing on the internet after paying for professional conversion and restoration.

http://wildfiretube.com/news.php?id=11

Our initial "new" videos/films should be online in a few weeks.

I was on initial attack that morning and remember passing the upper end of San Bernardino on our way to the fire origin and never dreamed it would reach all the way to the residential section of the city. We were a type 3 assigned to Waterman Villiage for structure protection until one of the chief officers began frantically requesting all resources to North Park area. We attempted to move down Hwy 18 only to be met with a very spectacular fire storm crossing the highway, I mean rocks, flaming animals and assorted debris littered the highway. When we got to the bottom it was like nightime. STL just said find a house that you think can save and let us go. I remember driving several blocks before eventually finding a house that was only partially involved. Hooked to a hydrant and almost got electrocuted from falling energized powerpole. Wind unreal, literally swept me off my feet several times. So sad, many residents begging you to save their homes, nothing you could do but watch them burn to the ground.

It will be great to see the Wildland Firefighter Foundation's monument when it's installed. Any word on when that will be? I am planning a trip with my family to visit the Wildland Firefighter Monument when we're next in Boise. I hope the fundraiser was a big success!

Additional research has yielded that there may have been several fatalities when firefighters were over-run by flames protecting or retreating to Pine Knot Camp . Most sources describe many of the firefighters as "Mexican workers" forcefully conscripted into service under threat of arrest or death.

Wow man, boss video!

Oh to hear the sounds of radial engines on the left flank again! Two B-17s on the ramp at the same time, surrounded by TBMs. Those sights were long gone by the time I started in the fire service and even longer gone by the time I started flying.

The video mentioned Bobby Kosar. I sort of know him, I worked with his brother Rick for years. Rick was a Capt. for RIV. Bob retired as a Capt. for Northwest Airlines and is living in south RVC, according to his sister.

HMT sure looks different without a ton of buildings in the background. Thanks for the glimpse into the past.

It took me a while to digest your last post, the concept of cutting mid-level management loose is a little hard for me to process.

i was going to ask if there was a policy of reassignment or transfer in place, but it appears as if this post may answer my question.

I wish you well in this, I can't imagine the turmoil that it brings.

Good luck.

An ESF 4 rep from the USFS showed me this tool a few days ago, and I was very impressed. Working in the Situation Unit can be daunting on disaster where fires are popping up left and right, and leadership wants to know info ASAP. Glad to hear that this tool was developed by ground pounders, instead of the brass.

See discussion on the Wildlandfire.com "Hotlist" titled, "Anyone else see a problem with the resource order on Pala".
http://wildlandfire.com/hotlist/showthread.php?t=21843

At some point, experience, common sense, and cost accountability must be addressed in the performance of new ICs.

Just because you can order it, doesn't mean you need it... or can afford it.

The folks with real experience (Type 1, Type 2, and Type 3 ICs, current and former) keep getting "gang jumped" by folks who have NEVER walked in their shoes, whenever they try to share their lessons learned on "They Said" or the "Hotlist".

It seems the newer ICs are more concerned with twitter, the "Hotlist", "They Said", and Blackberries... than actually listening and learning from folks who have already made the mistakes they are making...

IMHO as a former Type 1 IC

Capt. Schmoe,

It was an important success story to tell. Unfortunately, the "agency" chose to initiate a Serious Accident Investigation instead of sharing lessons learned.

Thanks for your reply and best of wishes in your upcoming retirement.

It is situations like this that make you appreciate the quality of the people you work with. Rather than a bunch of people running around yelling, the crews took care of business and got it done. A tragedy averted due to strong work. Well done to them.

This is the first I have heard of this event, I hope that the affected firefighter has made a complete recovery.

Thanks for sharing this.

Final cost was well over $15 million. Dozens of firefighter injuries. Numerous near-misses and safety lapses recorded and identified.

It ended well with no serious injuries or fatalities, but was that as a result of HRO planning and implementation, or luck?.... or a combination of both?

I agree, This seems to be an incredible amount of risk and dollars spent for not much value.

I think that in CalFire as well as the USFS the tactics of the ICT's are rarely questioned. Unit managers hand the fire and the responsibility off to the ICT's and a meaningful review is a rare happening. Sure, the finances are reviewed, but who is to question the actions of the Fire Gods ?

Royal,

I agree. It's time for Doctrine, Just Culture, and "fire management" as a PROFESSION to be standard operating procedures within the federal land management agencies.

Unfortunately, federal wildland firefighters are still just "Forestry Technicians"... supporting the science and profession of FORESTRY... and not being allowed to represent OUR unique PROFESSIONAL education, skills, and abilities. Hell, there are VERY FEW Foresters even left in the Forest Service to SUPPORT.

The #1 hurdle is proper classification for WILDLAND FIREFIGHTERS as a distinct and unique profession... It used to be one of the ORIGINAL goals of the FWFSA.

It seems that the Forest Service Fire Doctrine and Forest Service actions are in direct conflict.

Fighting is a dangerous job. The more time spent on the fireline is more exposure to risk, therefore smaller fires of shorter duration are safer than large fires that burn for weeks or months. This applies to groundpounders and air assets.

USFS should adopt a reasonable policy for Wilderness fires that should include total suppression ( no MIST ) when the Energy Release Component approaches extreme levels.

Its common for the USFS to use Smokejumpers on fires with road access here in Northern California. Why expose those young jumpers to the risk ?

The US Forest Service has adopted a "Head in the Sand" approach to the encroaching Wildland Urban Interface , refusing to allow its crews to attack vehicle or structure fires or perform basic Emergency Medical Service. Why not provide those young firefighters with the tools, safety equipment and the training to do the job in changing world?

The Doctrine and all of this talk of Just Culture seems to a salve for management's conscience as they continue to try to fight fire in the last century.

Thank you to everyone who has offered comments and thoughts "behind the scenes". We appreciate them.

We agree that "Foundational Doctrine" is a great concept, and the video is good.

We were hoping some folks would speak out.. ON THE RECORD.. to show some support.

RamblingChief.Com is just a voice of the wildland fire community and has many authors/editors. All volunteers.

It all depends on what kind of supervisors you have worked for. I was one of the lucky ones in my USFS career to work for some of the most respected Captains/BC/DIV Cheifs. They where able to teach me a lot of goods and bads, but they where good leaders and I have a piece of each of them in me now that I am a supervisor/leader. Without working wit those people who knows where I would of ended up. I owe those people a lot for getting them to where I am at now.
